26 ayin (eye)

Ayin is the path between Hod, where energy is concentrated into mental forms, and Tiphareth, the central sephirah of beauty and harmony, where the incarnating soul resides. The path of ayin transforms the intuitive light of the soul into mind-forms comprehensible to the human brain and vice versa. Ayin means 'eye' but it refers to two ways of seeing: Downwards, Tiphareth sacrifices itself by employing the energy into the denser human forms of Hod. Upwards, Hod's precise but narrow forms of human language and culture are left behind in order to achieve the intuitive powers of Tiphareth, the socalled knowledge and conversation of The Holy Guardian Angel, the all-seeing eye of the Egyptians. "Renovating Intelligence" is a proper name for such renewal of our perspective. However, letting go of our thoughts, our mental concepts, our cultural perceptive history is not an easy task. Language seperates, draws distinctions and is a source of evil, unless enlightened by the heart. For most of us, the reception of light from Tiphareth is overshadowed or distorted by human mind-forms which we have come to identify with reality. One does not have study the philosophies of Nietzsche, Adorno or Foucault in order to understand that this construction of reality leaves us stuck in a state of mental slavery or bondage, directed by convention instead of the heart. In tarot, The Devil in the form of Pan, the Goat, is associated with Ayin for a good reason. The cultural labels of good and evil stick to our language and blocks perception. The key is an opening of the eye, completely accepting, and therefore seeing, all there is. As a simple letter, Ayin refers to mirth: A strong sense of humour may be a superior road to acceptance. The all-digesting can-eating goat of the comic strip provides perhaps the clearest interpretation. There is nothing in the universe not of God, including the Devil.
