22 lamed (ox-goad)

Lamed is the path aligning the will of God in Geburah with the personal individuation in Tiphareth. Lamed means 'ox goad' but also 'to teach'. The grinding force of Geburah puts a steady pressure on the soul that it may stick to its spiritual path. The symbols on the tarot trump Adjustment (Justice) associates Lamed with the sign of Libra and the Egyptian goddess of karma, Maat, who weighs the hearts/souls of the dying on the scales of truth against a feather, assisted by Anubis. In Egyptian mythology, Maat stands for right, truth, law and rectitude. Lamed reveals the truth by providing justice, a tough price to pay for each deviation from divine law. The sword of Geburah enables this "Faithful Intelligence" to ceaselessly direct and correct our life from outside so that "spiritual virtues are increased" (supported by Chesed on the path of Yod, the direction from within).
